THE RIVERTOWN TRIO

The Rivertown Trio came together because of divine intervention. First I met Gary, unexpectedly. Then he brought in Russ who he had known for 35 years. Then we became us. The true story is about syncronicity, the mysterious ways of the universe and fate. Many years ago while listening to a New Riders of the Purple Sage album (over and over), I realized how much I loved their sound and Marmaduke’s voice and the lilting sound of the slide guitar. I loved the kind of music they played and didn’t even know then that is was called country rock/Americana music. Who knew many years later, I would be playing in a band with two of their musicians.

Musician Gary Vogensen

Gary has been playing guitar (and slide and harmonica) and singing professionally since the 70s. He has toured and/or played with the Elvin Bishop Band, Maria Muldaur, Norton Buffalo, Mike Bloomfield, Commander Cody, Carlene Carter, New Riders, Etta James and many others. He has a deep seated passion for the blues and jazz and loves to play with us, too! Gary is a virtuoso guitarist and fabulous singer, a wonderful human and makes us laugh…a lot.

Russ Gauthier

Russ is a world class act. He taught himself acoustic, electric and lap steel guitar, mandolin, fiddle, banjo and dobro and plays most of those instruments with the band and is a beautiful singer. He has been recording and performing for more than 40 years playing diverse musical styles. He toured the world with the New Riders of the Purple Sage for over 15 years and has performed with Delbert McClinton, Doug Kershaw, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Rick Danko and many others. Russ whips us into shape!

Musician Julie Bernard

Julie is the leader of the Rivertown Trio and is passionate about the music and songs that make up the band’s diverse repertoire.  She has performed for over 15 years, met Gary and Russ over 10 years ago, and has been joyfully singing, playing guitar and doing percussion in the band with them ever since.

“When I met Gary and Russ, we just clicked. They are my brothers! In rehearsals, we laugh, we cry, we sing and play our hearts out, and even when we argue it is still fun! They make me be the best I can be and for that, I am eternally grateful."

Julie Bernard

My in-box is overloaded with new albums by local musicians and bands … one of my favorite new albums is “Roadside Attraction” by the Rivertown Trio … singer, Julie Bernard realizes lifelong dream recording this collection of 13 country and Americana tunes with bandmates Gary Vogensen, one of our top guitarists and singers and former New Riders of the Purple Sage star Russ Gauthier. The trio lends airtight harmonies to tastefully chosen songs…
